Conversely 2005 ANTIDOTE Essay Contest
1. Subject and Guidelines
Our essay contest is being held in order to promote writing for our Antidote section. Contest entries should conform to Conversely's general submission guidelines, and particularly to the Antidote essay guidelines. Read our Antidote archives for samples of the types of essay we are looking for, including last year's winner. Entries must be original and never-before published.
2. Eligibility and Regulations
This contest is open to all persons 18 years of age and older. No person associated with Conversely may enter (this includes our editors and consultants, but excludes writers). This contest is subject to the provisions of all applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations. This offer is void where prohibited. Entrant agrees that this contest is governed by the laws of the state of California and that the contest is void in states or countries where prohibited or restricted.
3. Number of Entries
We welcome multiple entries per contestant. Each entry must be submitted separately.
4. Dates of Contest
Entries will be accepted between April 1, 2005 and June 30, 2005. Contest winners will be notified by September 30, 2005. The list of winners will be posted on Conversely's website by October 1, 2005.
Two winners will receive cash prizes as follows: 1st place: $250, 2nd place: $125.
Conversely reserves the right to publish the winning essays, with no further payment or compensation to the author than the above prize money. If a winning entry is selected for publication, the author cedes to Conversely the following rights: exclusive electronic rights for 90 days, and non-exclusive thereafter; non-exclusive print anthology rights. For further details on rights ceded, see our standard contract. Winners will be required to sign a contract.
Judging will be done by Conversely editors, based on the Antidote guidelines. All decisions are final.
7. How to Enter
Entries will be accepted by e-mail or regular mail. (NOTE: Contest entries should NOT be submitted via our Online Submissions page.) All entries must be accompanied by a $7.50 (seven dollar and fifty cent) reading fee, as well as the writer's full name, address, and telephone number. By entering, the person sending the entry certifies they meet this contest's eligibility requirements.
E-mail entries : Send your entry in an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org. The text of the essay must be pasted into the body of the e-mail, with the legend 'The End' or '###' clearly marked at the bottom of the entry (so we can verify it arrived complete). Otherwise, you can attach the essay in either RTF or TXT formats (no other format is acceptable). Make sure your name, address and telephone number are included in the body of the e-mail.
Once we receive your e-mail entry, we will send you a confirmation e-mail with a reference number. After receiving this confirmation, please pay your reading fee by either:

If you don't receive a confirmation e-mail from us within seven days of your e-mail entry, assume your entry was lost in cyberspace and please try again.
E-mail entries must be received by June 30, 2005. An entry will not be read until its corresponding payment is received. Deadline for payments to be received (not sent) is July 31, 2005.
Regular mail entries : Send your entry (typed, double-spaced) with a cover letter including your name, address and telephone number. Include a check for $7.50 made out to Conversely, Inc. (Note: If you are submitting from outside the U.S., please submit via e-mail and pay via PayPal, unless you can send a check drawn on a US bank). Also include either an e-mail address or a self-addressed, stamped envelope, if you want to be notified of the winners. Entries will not be returned. Regular mail entries must be postmarked no later than June 30, 2005, and received by July 31, 2005.
